St. Lucia has reached a significant milestone in its national development. The Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) has signed a contract with NH International (Caribbean) Ltd. for the construction of a new terminal building and airside facilities at Hewanorra International Airport, the island’s principal international gateway.
What’s Planned at Hewanorra International Airport
The contract, valued at approximately US$278.8 million, including VAT, covers Packages 2 and 3 of the airport’s redevelopment. NH International (Caribbean) Ltd. was selected as the best evaluated bidder following an open international competitive bidding process that received seven bids.
Key features of the project include:
- A new three-storey terminal building
- Five enclosed boarding bridges, allowing passengers to walk directly between the terminal and aircraft, sheltered from the weather
- New baggage handling and inspection systems
- An increase in aircraft parking spaces from six to eleven
Construction under this contract is scheduled for completion in December 2029, with operational readiness and transfer activities continuing through December 2030.
A Better Journey for Residents and Visitors
For Saint Lucians traveling abroad, families returning home, and visitors arriving on the island, the planned improvements mean more space and a more comfortable journey through the airport. The redevelopment is a strategic investment aimed at enhancing international connectivity, improving the travel experience, and supporting the continued growth of tourism, commerce, and the wider national economy.
What This Means for St. Lucia Real Estate
Infrastructure and real estate are closely linked. For buyers and investors, access is one of the most important factors in choosing a second home or investment property, and an upgraded international gateway strengthens the case for St. Lucia as a destination. Improved connectivity and a more comfortable arrival experience may help support continued international interest in the island, particularly among buyers from North America, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
This investment also complements the wave of new development already taking place across the island, from resort residences and branded hotels to villa communities in areas like Rodney Bay and Cap Estate. Together, these projects signal confidence in the long-term future of the St. Lucia luxury real estate market.
